In the Arctic, the Norwegian city of Longyearbyen, located in the Svalbard archipelago, has been extracting coal as an economic and energy source for one hundred years. In 2015, an election year in Longyearbyen and with coal prices falling, the issue of sustainable development has emerged as heated issue amongs its citizens. According to some scientists, politicians and city locals, Longyearbyen is now facing a race against the clock.
