Outi lives on a tree farm in Finland. The day’s work begins very early, as the trees need a lot of care. And then there’s the fruit and vegetable crops that her father grows. They sow the seeds in spring. Outil learns a lot from her father out in the forest. He shows her how to plant the trees and choose the ones that will be cut at the end of autumn - they’ll be sold as Christmas trees. He also teaches her how to collect the sap from the trunks of the birch trees. They use it to make a very special liqueur, called Malha. Outi helps out with preparations for the tourists that visit the farm every week. She serves them drinks and cakes that her mother helps her to make. She wouldn’t dream of missing the visits – the tourists leave tips, and she gets to keep them for pocket money.
